The BCCI is considering increasing the IPL season to 94 games from 2028. There are no proposals to introduce new teams anytime soon, though. The IPL transitioned to its 74-match current format in 2022 when Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) entered the league. Plans to expand the matches to 84 by 2025 were made earlier, but it was put on the backburner due to a congested schedule and objections from broadcasters, who did not want too many double-headers. Expansion, however, is still a plan for the future. Dhumal said: "Definitely, that might be an opportunity. We've been discussing in ICC, we've been discussing in-house in BCCI. Given how the interest of the fan is changing with regard to bilateral and ICC events, in regard to franchise cricket and T20 cricket, we'll have to talk more seriously about it and see how we can create maximum value for the stakeholders of the game. "Ideally, we'd want a larger window, or to maybe go on from 74 to 84 or 94 at some point… So that every team gets to play against every team home and away, for that, you need 94 games." The window in the international cricket calendar of the IPL, or the Future Tours Programme (FTP), is booked for the next two years. The window is available from mid-March to the last of May. The IPL chairman Arun Dhumal said the BCCI will consider very seriously a complete home-and-away system of 94 games for the next media-rights cycle, which will start in 2028. But given the landscape, how it is changing and evolving over the years, maybe at some point in time we would look and take that option. "There's been so much cricket: we came back from Australia from a Test series, we had this Champions Trophy, and on top of that we have this IPL. That is why it was decided that it doesn't make sense from going from 74 to 84 [in 2025], but whenever we think that the time is opportune, we'll take that call." Next year, when cricket boards are negotiating the next FTP, the duration of the IPL season will also be on the agenda. Some franchise officials have indicated that they favor a 94-match season. But whether it is possible will largely depend on broadcaster interest. TV and streaming figures usually decline mid-way through the IPL season. The broadcasters feel this is because audiences tire. The 2025 IPL season will run for nine weeks and comprise 12 double-headers. In order to have a home-and-away season, two extra weeks would most probably need to be added to the international cricket calendar.
