Each of the 10 IPL teams can retain up to six players before the 2025 auction, with no limit on nationality and one has to be an uncapped player. Even the Right to Match (RTM) option has also been revived in the IPL. These retention rules were finalized by the IPL Governing Council in a meeting that took place on Saturday. This time, teams must pay more if they want to retain more players. Jay Shah- the BCCI secretary, stated in a media release "The IPL franchises can retain a total of 6 players from their existing squad. This can be either via retention or by using the Right to Match (RTM) option,” “It is at the discretion of the IPL franchise to choose their combination for Retentions and RTMs. The 6 retentions/RTMs can have a maximum of 5 capped players (Indian & Overseas) and a maximum of 2 uncapped players.” The BCCI did not give exact details about purse reductions for each retention, but a BCCI official explained the "pay more to retain more" policy. The two other additional retentions will be higher than the third. The 4th and the 5th retentions will see a reduction of Rs. 18 crore and Rs. 14 crore, respectively. This brings down the auction purse for a team by Rs. 75 crore, for five players, leaving them with just Rs. 45 crore for the IPL auction. In addition to these five, teams can retain an uncapped Indian player for a purse reduction of Rs. 4 crore. This covers Indian players who last played internationally five years ago. The BCCI has now approved this rule, allowing Chennai Super Kings to keep MS Dhoni as an uncapped player. To prevent overseas players from choosing when to play in the IPL as they please, stricter rules have been introduced. BCCI stated, “Any Overseas Player will have to register for the Big Auction. In case the overseas player doesn’t register, then he will be ineligible to register in the following year’s player auction,” stated the BCCI. “Any player who registers in the player auction and after getting picked at the auction, makes himself unavailable before the start of the season, will get banned from participating in the tournament and player auction for two seasons.” Last year, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc got big deals in the mini auction. In fact, more cricketers registered themselves for the mini auction than they did for the mega auction in the past. The reason is that the bid amount is a little higher in the mini auction.
