The Gujarat Titans (GT) have created interest with their New Year's tweet hinting at a potential captaincy change ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. The Titans posted a picture on social media showing Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan looking at a blank slate. The caption said, "A clean slate. A new story." This has sparked talks that Rashid might take over as captain, replacing Shubman Gill. The leg spinner has been one of GT's most valuable assets since joining the franchise in 2022. Ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, GT retained Rashid for INR 18 crore, which made him the highest-paid player for the franchise. As one of the world's leading T20 players and a match-winner, Rashid brings immense experience and leadership qualities. He has captained Afghanistan in international cricket previously and has led GT twice. Here is what Rashid had earlier said on the Gujarat Titans podcast "That was a special match as it was my first match as captain in IPL, and that too during Ramadan. I woke up at 3 am for sehri. I got a message from Ashish Nehra, saying 'Khan sahab get ready. Hardik might not play as he is not well. There was excitement and pressure. It was a dream," A clean slate. A new story. ✨#AavaDe pic.twitter.com/fNt319mJlP — Gujarat Titans (@gujarat_titans) January 1, 2025 On the other hand, Gill, who was retained for INR 16.5 crore, had taken over the captaincy in the year 2024 as Hardik Pandya had gone to Mumbai Indians. Gill's stint as skipper in 2024 was disappointing as the Titans ended up eighth in the table, winning only five out of 14 games, a far cry from their championship-winning debut season in 2022 and a runners-up finish in 2023 under Pandya. Though Gill has been brilliant with his performances, the overall decline in form of the team has raised questions about his leadership capabilities. Jos Buttler was fetched for INR 15.75 crore who would add muscles to the top order, with young guns such as Nishant Sindhu and Kumar Kushagra to bring depth to middle order. As far as GT is concerned, they have won the best available pacers at their disposal and all-rounder Washington Sundar.
