As per the new revised rules for the Indian Premier League, captains of respective teams won't face bans for slow over-rate offenses, as used to happen since the last season. The conclusion came after a meeting hosted in the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on March 20, prior to the captains' photoshoot for the 2025 IPL. According to the previous rules, captains faced bans for one match apart from being handed a Rs 30 lakh fine. Previously, in Delhi Capital's last match, against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, in 2024, Rishabh Pant, the then DC captain, suffered a ban, due to which, Axar Patel led the squad. Not only that, the Mumbai skipper Hardik Pandya suffered the same last season and will not be leading MI in their opening match in 2025, against their archrival Chennai Super Kings. Instead, Suryakumar Yadav will be taking the leadership responsibilities. One of the major aim was to explain the newly revised rules to the captain, ahead of the 2025 season. Other than the slow over-rate offense revision, there were two other changes in the rules. Dew in night IPL matches makes it tough for bowlers to grip the ball, favoring the chasing team. To counter this, the BCCI has introduced a fresh ball after the 11th over of the second innings. Umpires will decide its necessity based on dew levels, mainly in night games. Afternoon matches may not require it. The saliva ban, imposed during COVID-19, has also been lifted. Many players, including Mohammed Shami, Vernon Philander, and Tim Southee, pushed for its return, citing its role in generating swing and reverse swing. Now, bowlers can again use both sweat and saliva to shine the ball. These changes will significantly impact IPL 2025. The second new ball will balance conditions in night matches, while the return of saliva will aid fast bowlers. The BCCI aims to make matches more competitive and engaging for both players and fans.
