Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has shared an update on Jasprit Bumrah’s recovery and also called him one of the best bowlers in the world. Speaking at a press interaction in Mumbai, Jayawardene confirmed that Bumrah is currently undergoing rehabilitation at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (formerly NCA) in Bengaluru. "Jasprit is at the moment with NCA. He has just started his progress," Jayawardene said. "We have to wait and see what their [BCCI medical team] feedback is on him," he said. The former Sri Lankan batter said that Bumrah is in good spirits and remains a vital part of Mumbai Indians. "At the moment, everything is going well. But obviously, it is on a day-to-day basis. He is in good spirits. Not having him is a challenge. He is one of the best bowlers in the world and has been a fantastic pro for us for many years," he said. Bumrah, who made his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians, has been a cornerstone of the franchise, taking 165 wickets in 133 matches. However, a stress-related back injury sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy forced him to miss the ICC Champions Trophy. 'Someone else must step up' With Bumrah sidelined, Jayawardene acknowledged that Mumbai Indians will need others to take on the responsibility. "We'll have to wait or find an opportunity for someone else to step up. That's how I see it. It gives us an element of trying a few things and seeing how things work. The early part of the season allows us to do that," he said. In Bumrah’s absence, Mumbai will rely on experienced bowlers like Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, and Reece Topley. Skipper Hardik Pandya may also have to bowl more overs to balance the attack. Following their first match against CSK, Mumbai Indians will travel to Ahmedabad to face Gujarat Titans on March 29 and then take on Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Cricket Ground on April 4. Bumrah is expected to miss all three fixtures but could return for MI’s first home game on April 7 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
