Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have called up 17-year-old Mumbai batter Ayush Mhatre for mid-season trials on Thursday. The youngster, who has been making waves in domestic cricket, has now joined the CSK camp at Chepauk in Chennai. According to reports in The Times of India, Mhatre has impressed CSK's talent scouts, leading to his call-up. Notably, this isn't his first interaction with the franchise. The young batter had also attended trials before the IPL 2025 auction but went unsold. However, the team's recent performances seem to have reignited interest from the CSK management. CSK have struggled in the tournament so far, losing two out of their three matches. One of their key concerns has been their middle order, who have been below-par in the tournament so far. As CSK look to revamp their approach, Mhatre’s selection for trials hints at a possible addition if the need arises. "Yes, we’ve called him for trials. He has impressed our talent scouts," CSK's MD & CEO Kasi Vishwanathan told TOI. He also confirmed that there is no injury concern in the current CSK squad. However, should the need arise, Mhatre could be a potential replacement. "No, if there’s any need, we’ll do that. We’re not picking anybody, it's just a trial," he added. Who is Ayush Mhatre? Ayush Mhatre is a Mumbai-born cricketer who recently made headlines by becoming the youngest player to score 150-plus in men's List A cricket. He smashed an impressive 181 runs against Nagaland. Mhatre was also part of the Irani Cup-winning Mumbai squad that defeated the Rest of India to claim the title after 27 years in October. Although Mhatre is yet to make his T20 debut for his senior side, his performances in List A and First-Class cricket have been noteworthy. In seven List A matches, he has scored 458 runs at a strike rate of 135.5. In addition, he has played nine First-Class matches, accumulating 504 runs.
