The Indian Premier League (IPL) will stick to 74 matches in the 2025 season. This decision comes at odds with the 2022 IPL media rights deal, which had a plan for 84 matches in IPL 2025 and 2026. Why BCCI Won't Increase IPL 2025 Matches Thus, the BCCI decided to trim the workload of the players as they already engage themselves in playing games in domestic, international, and IPL. BCCI president Jay Shah shed light on this decision and stated, "While 84 matches are part of the media contract, it is within our jurisdiction to determine the final schedule. The focus is on ensuring that our players are in peak condition for important international tournaments." In the 74-match seasons of 2023 and 2024, there were 18 special matches. If there were more games, like 84 or 94, there would have been 20 or 22 special matches. For now, IPL 2025 will have 18 important matches, which include the first match, weekend evening games, and the four playoff games.
