The Indian Premier League (IPL), the richest and most star-studded T20 league of cricket, has been a world magnet for talent for a long time, attracting the best of Australia to New Zealand. Ever since its launch in 2008, the IPL has changed the economics and fan culture of cricket, with its billion-dollar brand equity and sold-out crowds. But former Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq has caused a firestorm by calling for cricket boards across the globe to "ban IPL" and stop sending players, citing disparity in player-exchange policies. Making an appearance on a Pakistan news channel program 'Champions Trophy Hungama', ex-Pakistan captain tore apart the IPL's monopoly. Pointing towards the lack of Indian cricketers in foreign leagues, Inzamam championed that international boards need to take a "tit-for-tat" policy to protect their interests. Here is what Inzamam-ul-Haq said: "Every top player from every country comes and plays the IPL. But no Indian player plays any of the leagues in other countries. Every board should stop sending their players for IPL from now on." Inzamam's comments largely revolved around reciprocity and equity of the game as he tactfully indicated India's arrogance in not despatching players to other leagues. "Agar aap apne players ko release nahi karte kisi bhi league ke liye to dusre board ko bhi to stance lena chahiye na?” (If you don’t release your players for any other league games, then other boards should also take a stance for their players.)" Interestingly, Inzamam's remarks also touch upon the long-standing tension between the BCCI and PCB, with Pakistani players excluded from the IPL since 2009 because of political tensions. Inzamam's boycott call is prior to IPL's 18th season, which is set to start on March 22, 2025. The opening game is booked between Kolkata Knight Riders vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata and the league would conclude with the final game on May 25.
