Shubman Gill, India's newly appointed Test captain, is unlikely to be available for the second India A match in Northampton. The India A vs England Lions series starts in Canterbury on May 30. Gill was supposed to join the team for the second game, which starts on June 6, along with Sai Sudharsan, but with the IPL 2025 final being played on June 3, he doesn't have a lot of time to rest. Gill is presently leading Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025. It is unclear whether GT will play the Eliminator or Qualifier 1, but they will be involved with the playoffs at least until May 30. If GT lose the Eliminator, they will finish their run on May 30. If they make it to Qualifier 2, they can be playing until June 1. Given the narrow time frame, BCCI reportedly intends to give Gill a week's rest before heading to Beckenham for an intra-squad match on June 16. The BCCI is reportedly keen to give Gill the opportunity to lead the team as Test captain, after taking over from Rohit Sharma, who stepped down and retired from red-ball cricket. With India's Test announcement for the England tour now complete, players will get the opportunity to acclimatise to English conditions. For many of the players, this will be their first tour to England. The two-match series against the India A team has been scheduled for the players to make a transition back to red-ball after months of white-ball cricket and the IPL. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shardul Thakur have already reached England. The other players will travel to England within a day or two, except Gill and Sudharsan. This series is also a great opportunity for the coach Gautam Gambhir to assess Karun Nair and Shardul Thakur before they rejoin the Test squad. India will also want to assess Sai Sudharsan to possibly see him as an opener. Batting coach Ryan ten Doeschate will travel with India A.
