The Indian cricket team wore black armbands during their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semifinal against Australia in Dubai on Tuesday. This gesture was a mark of respect for Padmakar Shivalkar, the legendary left-arm spinner, who passed away at the age of 84 in Mumbai. Shivalkar was a dominant force in India’s domestic cricket scene and a key contributor to Bombay’s golden era in the Ranji Trophy. Shivalkar was an integral part of the Bombay team that won nine Ranji Trophy titles between 1965-66 and 1976-77. His ability to turn the ball sharply and trouble batters with his accuracy made him one of the finest spinners in domestic cricket. Many former cricketers, along with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), paid tribute to him. The decision to wear black armbands was a collective effort by the team and the board to honor his legacy. In a statement released on Tuesday, BCCI acknowledged Shivalkar’s immense contribution to Mumbai cricket. Despite never playing for India, his influence on the game was undeniable. Shivalkar had an outstanding first-class career, taking 589 wickets in 124 matches at an astonishing average of 19.69. His best performance came in the 1972-73 Ranji Trophy final, where he tore through Tamil Nadu’s batting lineup with figures of 8/16 and 5/18, guiding Bombay to yet another title. BCCI President Roger Binny paid tribute, stating, "Indian cricket has lost a gem. Shivalkar's contribution to Mumbai and domestic cricket will never be forgotten." Secretary Devajit Saikia added, "He was an inspiration to generations of cricketers. His skill and longevity in the game were remarkable." Despite competing in the same era as Bishan Singh Bedi, which limited his chances at the international level, Shivalkar's greatness was never overlooked. In 2017, he received the prestigious Col. C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award, a fitting recognition of his invaluable service to Indian cricket.
