Wicket, wicket, and a dropped catch! Axar Patel's fate shone, but not enough to register the first hattrick in the 2025 Champions Trophy. On February 20, in the match against Bangladesh at Dubai, the Indian captain dropped an easy catch at the first slip of Axar Patel. It happened in the 9th over when Axar Patel cleared Tanzid Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim in consecutive balls. During the first dismissal, the umpire took some time, but the wicketkeeper KL Rahul was convinced that Hasan had nicked the ball and tried appealing. Meanwhile, the umpire declared Hasan out. In the next ball, Axar delivered a wide-ish on the crease delivery, which kissed Mushfiqur's bat to KL's gloves. For the third ball, the stage was set, two slips and gully was brought in, planning for an edge. Axar executed it nicely, got the batter forward, and managed to get a thick edge as the ball deflected to Rohit Sharma in the first slip. It would have been an easy catch; the ball was right in front of Ro's hands, but a baffled Rohit juggled the ball and finally dropped it. The entire team, who had already started celebration, stopped midway, with Rohit visibly frustrated. He literally smacked on the field, repeatedly apologizing to Axar Patel. Rohit hates milestones of hattrick hence the drop catch forgive him. 👍 pic.twitter.com/CEkzR8OVEK — MR. FIX IT ✍🏻 (@Bikis18__) February 20, 2025 Tanzid ☝️Mushfiqur☝️Hattrick... Had he completed it, Axar would have been the first player with a hat-trick on debut in ICC ODI events and the first Indian spinner to achieve this feat in men's ICC tournaments. Additionally, he would have joined Kuldeep Yadav as the only Indian spinner with an ODI hat-trick. Meanwhile, Jerome Taylor remains the sole player with a Champions Trophy hat-trick (vs Australia, 2006).
