Cricketers like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, and MS Dhoni were popular faces endorsing several betting platforms like Dream11, MPL, and Winzo. However, with the Indian government banning such practice in the country, these cricketers are likely to suffer massive financial losses. A cricbuzz report suggested that the cricketers will be facing a massive loss of INR 15-200 crore collectively. Mainly, the advertisements are also banned from all outlets, and thus, the cricketers will be facing a deficit. Virat Kohli had signed a deal of INR 10-12 crore with MPL. Rohit Sharma had signed with Dream11, while MS Dhoni was signed to Winzo. Both earned around 6 to 7 crore Indian rupees. However, young players earn a fixed amount, mostly of INR 1 crore each year, from these companies. With the sites being banned, it will wipe away a major steady income from their bank. A report from Cribuzz said, “For some other players, it effectively wipes out their entire endorsement income as these companies were the only brands on their roster." The report further mentioned players like Washington Sundar and Mohammed Siraj, who are expected to lose a third of their endorsements. Recently, the European Cricket Network suspended its operations this week due to being financially dependent on India-based gaming companies. Beyond cricket, the ban on online gaming is expected to impact the advertising industry significantly. Reports suggest the sector could lose about 7-8%, translating to ₹8,000-10,000 crore annually. According to Elara Capital VP Karan Taurani, online gaming contributes nearly 15-20% of the overall digital advertising market.
