West Indies have omitted captain Kraigg Brathwaite from their 15-man team for the Test series against India. Alick Athanaze and Tagenarine Chanderpaul have been recalled by the selectors to boost a batting lineup selected for its spin-resilience. Brathwaite, who was dropped from the XI for the last Test against Australia, is out along with Keacy Carty, Johann Layne and Mikyle Louis. The team also has left-arm spinner Khary Pierre, who has not yet played a Test. Pierre and vice-captain Jomel Warrican, who has been a consistent performer in the West Indies Championship with 41 wickets at a stellar average of 13.56, are the two specialist spinners. Athanaze's last outing in red-ball cricket was in the subcontinent against Pakistan in January, and Chanderpaul, appearing in his last Test on the 2024 Australian tour, will be tasked with opening alongside John Campbell. Kevlon Anderson, with a robust first-class average of 42.05, remains in the team. The team leaves the Caribbean on September 22 and is to reach Ahmedabad on September 24, the first Test to be played from October 2. Chase, Hope, Alzarri and Warrican are the only four members of the team that toured India last in 2018-19. Barring that, the left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie has been given a rest. West Indies will host three T20Is against Nepal later this month, followed by two Tests in India. They next tour Bangladesh in October-November for a white-ball series before finishing the year with an all-format tour of New Zealand from November 5 to December 22, which includes five T20Is, three ODIs and three Tests.
