Bangladesh enjoyed the initial two sessions of the the opening day of the 1st Test between India and Bangladesh, but India ended the day in a very strong position by reaching 339 for 6 at stumps. Chennai's very own Ravichandran Ashwin was the big impact with the bat, along with Ravindra Jadeja, who helped India recover from what had seemed to start off as a tough day. Bangladesh chose to bowl first and their bowlers Hassan Mahmud (4 for 58) and Taskin Ahmed made all the difference. Mahmud had India's skipper Rohit Sharma walking back in the sixth over. He then sent Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli back to pavilion and Indians were reeling at 34/3 in 10 overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal played well from one end while wickets were tumbling from the other. Rishabh Pant (39 off 52), who was playing a Test after 629 days, added 62 runs with Jaiswal before Hasan got him out too. KL Rahul played a careful innings but was out soon after Jaiswal. Ravindra Jadeja (86 off 117) and local hero Ravichandran Ashwin (102 off 112) batted together. They took over and scored runs at a quicker pace, especially against the spinners Shakib al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz after tea. Bangladesh could not find a way to restrict them as they scored more than 5 an over. Ashwin scored his second century of Test cricket in his career at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Both the batters ended the day without losing their wickets, and their partnership reached 195 runs by stumps.
