Shubman Gill hit 161 runs from 162 balls on Thursday, July 5, as India declared their second innings at 427 for 6 from 83 overs. India's second innings aggregate, combined with their first innings score of 587, took them over the 1000-run mark in a Test match for the first time in their history. Prior to this, there were only four other sides which had achieved 1000 or more runs in a Test match, and it had occurred five times overall. England still holds the record for most runs in a single Test match. They made 1121 runs in a Test match against West Indies in Kingston in 1930. England had scored 849 runs in the first innings of the match and then declared their second innings at 272 for 9. India's previous record highest score in a Test match had been 916 runs, which they achieved against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground in January 2004.
