Coming off a huge and embarrassing defeat in Perth, Pat Cummins led Australian side has made a bold statement at the Adelaide Oval this Sunday, handing India a one sided, 10 wicket defeat. The visitors who were just starting to look settled and comfortable a week ago, have once again found themselves in a mess with all the departments failing miserably throughout this match. Meanwhile, the Aussies who were attracting a ton of criticism from the past 10 days have managed to bounce back and put the series in the absolute balance at 1-1. Whatever slightest of hopes India had before the beginning of day-3, vanished in the very first over of the day as Rishabh Pant was dismissed by Mitchell Starc. Nitish Reddy along with the lower order somehow managed to take a lead before them getting bowled out. Having a target of mere 19 runs, Australia made its path to victory in 3.2 overs without losing a single wicket and thus made its way to the top of the WTC Points Table, replacing India who now stand at the 3rd position. Pink ball continues to haunt Indian batters The D/N test started with Yashashvi Jaiswal getting dismissed LBW on the very first ball off Mitchell Starc. Coming too across the line to a straight ball and then his head falling over ensured that the brand new pink cherry finds him plumb in front of the sticks and leaves him no chance to escape. The same story continued with Shubman Gill who was looking positive. He too went to play across the line to a half volley off Scott Boland and had to make his way back to the pavillion. Four batters out of the top 8 were dismissed LBW in India's 1st innings highlighting a major technical flaw. Shubman Gill, once again looking impressive in the 2nd innings, had to go back to the hut because of a beaming inswinger from Starc which was almost unplayable and thus can't blame the batter much. Thus, the wicket to wicket line caused the downfall of multiple visitor batters. Talking about the 2nd innings, particularly against the middle and lower order, the Australians seemed to be quite confident about their short bowling plan. Dismissing 4-5 Indian batters using some spicy short stuff, the Aussies ensured that the world admires their perfect plan and execution. Also Read | Siraj vs Head: 'mates' seem to clear rift; Captain backs Siraj The seniors fail to deliver...again Captain Rohit Sharma, averaging 13 odd in his last 5 tests, once again looked below par and under- confident while staying at the crease. Going with the opening pair of Jaiswal and Rahul, the Indian skipper decided to bat at no. 6 but could manage only 9 runs across two innings. Virat Kohli, coming off an unbeaten hundred in Perth, playing at one of his favourite venues across the globe- the Adelaide Oval, couldn't get going once again as he edged the ball behind the stumps in both the innings managing a score of just 7 and 11. It's quite evident that the veteran has somewhere lost his old charm in the past 4-5 years and what we get to see from time to time are just the glimpses of THAT Kohli. The two pillars of Indian cricket in the past decade don't give their team and fans much confidence now, probably signalling towards the beginning of the end of their careers, atleast in tests. R. Ashwin who replaced W Sundar for this test, didn't contribute much to his team. The star off-spinner has been out of form since the home NZ series and in this match as well, his bowling never looked threatening. Rishabh Pant who is getting set almost every time he comes out to bat, hasn't played a big knock yet. It seems as if the kangaroos have made proper plans for him this time around and aren't letting him fly away. With the supoort of a massive Adelaide crowd, Head played a blistering knock of 140 runs off just 141 balls and made the entire bowling lineup and Rohit's captaincy look clueless....yes, once again. The foundation of Australia's inning was laid by a marvellous and solid partnership between Marnus Labuschagne and youngster Nathan McSweeney who tired out the bowlers and also took the shine off the ball. Both of them played out 100+ balls each with perfect technique and composure. A huge role in this was played by the lines of Indian pacers. During the 3rd session of day 1, the commentators couldn't stop talking about how the Indian pacers were bowling way outside the off stump which made it too easy for the two Aussie top order batters to leave the balls. The morning of day 2 saw Bumrah taking a couple more wickets but then Siraj's brilliant spell going unlucky and Harshit Rana being expensive proved too costly for India as Australia managed to get a lead of 157 runs which was almsot enough for an innings win. Bumrah and Siraj ended with 4 wickets each but the support was too late for Jasprit Bumrah. What lies ahead Just 10 days back, multiple cricket experts and former Australian cricketers were reacting as if this is the worst test side of the world and were asking for multiple players to be dropped, first of them being Marnus. But here stands this Aussie team, on the top of a thumping victory, establishing their dominance once again. On the other hand, the visitors have a task and multiple concerns in their heads once again. Where does Rohit bat, will Md. Shami join the squad, will Harshit and Ashwin be dropped, what will be Australia's lineup when Hazlewood comes back....whole lot of questions to be answered and the 3rd test is just less than a week away. Going in to Brisbane with 1-1 on the scoreline, The Gabba is definitely set for another blockbuster.
