The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is gearing up for some major changes to India’s ODI squad ahead of the three-match series against South Africa. The action kicks off on November 30, and there’s a lot of uncertainty surrounding the availability of Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer. Their injuries have prompted the selectors to think about some significant shifts, paving the way for players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant to step in. Gill picked up a neck injury on November 15 and has headed to Guwahati for the second Test against South Africa, but it’s still up in the air whether he’ll be able to play. Even if he’s fit, the BCCI might suggest he takes a breather, considering the 26-year-old has been in action non-stop since March. On the other hand, Shreyas suffered a laceration to his spleen on October 25 and spent several days in the ICU. While he’s on the mend, the BCCI is unlikely to take any chances with his fitness for this series. Also Read | Will Shubman Gill play the second Test vs South Africa at Guwahati? BCCI official update Potential Replacements and Squad Moves If both players are out for the ODIs, Tilak Verma is expected to step in for Shreyas. The left-handed batsman has been leading India A and has already made four ODI appearances. Jaiswal, who has been a backup opener, will likely team up with Rohit Sharma if Gill can’t play. Dhruv Jurel, who traveled to Australia but didn’t get a game, might lose his spot as Pant is back to full fitness and is anticipated to return, possibly batting at number four. KL Rahul is the top choice to lead India in Gill’s absence, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli not likely to take on that role. Hardik Pandya has been dealing with injuries, which makes Axar Patel a strong candidate for vice-captain. Since the series is being held in India, Varun Chakaravarthy could make a comeback as an extra spinner, while Prasidh Krishna might be left out. Having both Axar and Ravindra Jadeja in the lineup provides some redundancy, and Axar’s better batting skills keep him in the running for selection. These changes are aimed at ensuring India fields a well-rounded and competitive squad for the upcoming series.
