No play was seen on the second day of the second Test between India and Bangladesh at Kanpur due to light drizzle delayed the game in the afternoon. The ground remained covered all through the day. Even three super soppers could do little to help the ground staff today. The rain came down steadily until about 10 a.m., but after that it eased off somewhat. Had there been play, it might still have been possible to go on, but heavy rain the night before is what presented most of the problems. India won the toss after an hour's delay and Rohit Sharma decided to bowl first. It was the first instance where India chose to bowl first in a home Test in nine years, the last time having been against South Africa at Bengaluru in 2015, which was also curtailed due to rain. Openers Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam survived the new-ball overs by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. But with Akash Deep removing both, Mominul Haque and Najmul Hossain Shanto played sensibly to the extent that it seemed like Bangladesh can host one end. Then R Ashwin removed Shanto lbw before weather intervened in play once again ahead of either team seized total control.
