India pacer Gurnoor Brar etched his name into the record books during the third ODI against Afghanistan at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday. The right-arm fast bowler became the Indian bowler with the most wickets in a three-match maiden ODI series, surpassing the previous record jointly held by Yuzvendra Chahal and Prasidh Krishna. Brar entered the match with six wickets from the first two games after figures of 3/27 and 3/60. Needing just one wicket to claim the record outright, the Punjab pacer had to endure a long wait despite troubling the Afghanistan batters throughout his spell. The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 38th over when he produced a back-of-a-length delivery that stayed low after pitching. Mohammad Nabi was caught off guard as the ball crashed into his off stump, handing Brar his seventh wicket of the series and a place in India's ODI record books. Pace and Bounce Trouble Afghanistan Batters While the wicket came late, Brar remained one of India's most threatening bowlers during Afghanistan's innings. Operating consistently in the 140-145 kmph range, he extracted sharp bounce and movement from the Chennai surface, forcing the batters into uncomfortable positions. Ibrahim Zadran was among those tested by the young pacer. Brar repeatedly beat his outside edge and even struck him on the helmet with a sharp short-pitched delivery. His disciplined lengths and ability to generate seam movement ensured Afghanistan's batters rarely settled against him. There were a few setbacks as well. Brar overstepped on two occasions and conceded some boundaries, but he continued to attack and maintained his intensity through multiple spells. His mix of hard lengths and short deliveries kept pressure on batters such as Hashmatullah Shahidi and Nabi. Questions had surrounded his selection due to a lack of standout IPL or domestic numbers, but the fast bowler has responded impressively on the international stage. Although he still has areas to refine, particularly in terms of consistency and control, Brar has showcased attributes that are difficult to ignore. His pace, bounce and ability to challenge batters have made him a valuable option, with the series establishing him as one of India's most promising emerging fast bowlers.
