India A impressed greatly on Day 1 of the second unofficial Test against Australian A at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow, on Tuesday, September 23. The side made a few changes, with Shreyas Iyer missing out due to personal reasons, leaving the captaincy to wicket-keeper batter Dhruv Jurel. The hosts decided to bowl first after the toss, keeping regular Indians KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj, and Nitish Kumar Reddy in the playing XI. Ayush Badoni and Manav Suthar were added, replacing Abhimanyu Easwaran, Harsh Dubey respectively. Australia A also made Jack Edwards, Will Sutherland and Henry Thornton join their team. The innings of the visitors started on a jittery note with opener Campbell Kellaway getting out for only nine runs. The second-wicket stand of Sam Konstas and Nathan McSweeney stabilized the innings, adding over 50 runs. Konstas was given out for 49 by Mohammed Siraj on his comeback to red-ball cricket, while Oliver Peake added 29 runs. Cooper Connolly had a woeful day, getting dismissed for a duck. Lower-order batters Josh Philippe contributed 39 runs, while Will Sutherland and Corey Rocchiccioli chipped in with 10 and 2 runs respectively. The best performance was by Jack Edwards, who made a quick 88 out of 78 deliveries, hitting 11 fours and one six. Towards the fag end of the day, the two remaining Australian batsmen, Todd Murphy (29*) and Henry Thornton (10*), were not out. India A bowlers excelled with left-arm spinner Manav Suthar picking up a five-wicket haul for 93 runs from 28 overs. Brar aided with 2/71, with Siraj and Prasidh Krishna picking up one each. Australia A were 350/9 in 84 overs at the end of Day 1, with India A in a strong position going into the second day.
