Brendan McCullum, England's coach, has revealed that he is concerned about Ben Stokes after the captain was excluded from the team for the second Test against New Zealand following an incident in a London club. Stokes, along with fast bowler Gus Atkinson, were omitted from the squad after breaching team rules while celebrating England's win against New Zealand at Lord's. The players were reportedly seen in pubs in Fulham and Chelsea and ignored team curfew and were told to be in bed by midnight. Whilst there have been many speculations concerning the future of Stokes over the last few days, McCullum has said that he wants to focus on his captain's wellbeing rather than decisions concerning his long-term future. McCullum's Concern for Stokes When speaking before England's second Test against New Zealand at the Oval, McCullum told how he felt when he first heard about the incident. "When I first found out about it I was slightly bewildered, if I'm being honest. Then you go through a range of emotions. You go from being bewildered, on to angry, on to kind of gutted. But very quickly my overall emotion turned to worry and concern for Ben in particular. Since then it has been about how we support these guys, whilst not overlooking the fact they have not lived up to the standards we have set for ourselves." England's coach insisted that he wants to make sure that Stokes is supported although he was omitted from the squad along with Atkinson for failing to reach team standards. "For me it's very much about how we support these guys through the next stage, in particular Ben. That is very much where my mind is at, my worry for him." "What will be will be down the line. Those decisions are not for now. The concern is making sure Ben is fine. We need to make sure we look after him, rally around him, and in time we'll get on to those sorts of decisions." When asked about claims that Stokes had already begun training forDurhamand will turn out for them later this week, McCullum stated once more that his concern lies with the 35-year-old. "I'm worried about Ben. That's it. I'll leave it at that." Incident Leads To Squad Omission The incident began in the White Horse pub, Fulham and then continued onto the Rex Rooms club in Chelsea where a party was being held. Also in attendance were a group of rugby players which included two England internationals. It is claimed that at the club, one of the rugby players, totoa auvaa, attempted to punch Atkinson but accidentally hit an ECB security officer. Stokes and Atkinson were then told they were out of the squad to play in the second Test. As England continue to prepare for the second Test against New Zealand, all attention is on Stokes and what England will do to look after their captain.
