With the England vs India Test series knocking on the door, the veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami is likely to miss another crucial Test series owing to an injury. And this time, according to reports, sources claimed that BCCI can risk a half-recovered Shami to England. For a long time, Shami has been on the sidelines due to the ankle injury he suffered during the 2023 World Cup. Since then he has missed major tournaments and series. At some point there were hopes that he might join the Indian squad in Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, but fate had other plans. Shami was on the Bengal team, participating in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-24 while the Bengal medical team was closely monitoring him. Following that, he made a comeback in the home T20 series against England but started suffering again. Even in the 2025 Indian Premier League, his performance for Sunrisers Hyderabad was not on the mark. But despite this, a fit Shami would have likely been the first choice for the selectors, knowing his contributions for the team at home and overseas. But that he is struggling with injury is the major concern. A source close to the development has informed Revsports and said, "You cannot choose someone for red ball depending on his IPL bowling efforts. The selection committee will need to be 100% sure that Shami is in a position to bowl 15 overs in a day. It will be expected that he can keep going for 6-7 overs at a stretch. In IPL, even a four-over spell is divided into two, that is why it is no index for red ball selection.” Read also: Watch: Dhoni’s Adorable Reaction to ‘Thala’ Chant Goes Viral The source further added, "If you go purely by potential, Shami is a clear-cut choice. But, at this point what the selectors will need to see is if he is loading his body enough to give them comfort. Has he prepared enough for red ball cricket and bowling long-ish spells? Is there any fear of him breaking down? Selectors could even consult NCA sources to find out some of the answers." Post-Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's retirement, India will have Jasprit Bumrah as a sure bowler to tour. Whether Jadeja will travel or not is not sure. In such a scenario, Shami's presence would have added more experience to the new team to tour England. Notably, India will tour England for five Test matches starting on June 20.
