The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have a huge impact in world cricket as far as finances are concerned. It generates nearly 80% of the revenue for the International Cricket Council's (ICC). Jay Shah, who served as secretary of the BCCI from 2019 to 2024 and is currently the ICC Chairman, contributed significantly towards making BCCI financially even stronger, the strongest cricket board. India's matches, particularly the one against their arch-nemesis Pakistan, attracts huge number of viewers on Television, huge sponsorships, and jam-packed stadiums. But recent political and security concerns may cause India to shun playing matches against not just Pakistan, but Bangladesh as well. Security Tensions After Deadly Attack On April 22, a terrorist attack in Jammu & Kashmir's Pahalgam area killed 26 innocent individuals, majorly tourists. It had an impact on the region and also troubled India's cricket relations with neighboring nations. Relations with Bangladesh, though better compared to those with Pakistan, are now strained. A former Bangladeshi army officer made a controversial remark, hinting that Bangladesh should claim the northeast territory of India if India attacks Pakistan. The situation has deteriorated further because of it. Keeping these problems in view, sources indicate that India's scheduled tour of Bangladesh could be cancelled. Security of Indian players and officials is a major concern, and the BCCI is keeping a close eye before making any final decision. There is also speculation that India would not play Pakistan in upcoming ICC events such as the ICC T20 World Cup, ICC Champions Trophy and even in the Asia Cup. It will hurt their cricket boards financially, and the losses can be massive. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) India-Pakistan matches are one of the most viewed sporting events globally. Their match in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 had 3.5 crore live viewers. ICC made $3-4 million from such matches, some of which is distributed to boards such as PCB. If India ceases to play Pakistan in ICC events or Asia Cup, PCB might lose about $12-15 million every ICC Cycle. This may also observe a surge in loss upto ₹165–220 crore (approximately $20–26 million) every 4 years. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) India recently visited Bangladesh in 2022. That tour generated around ₹70–80 crore for the BCB. India's visit means full stadiums, Indian sponsors, and enormous TV viewership. BCB will lose ₹70–100 crore per visit if India postpones or cancels future tours. Also, if India insists on having exclusive groups in ICC tournaments, it will prevent Bangladesh from playing India, resulting in halved joint revenue from ICC broadcasts. That's an additional ₹20–30 crore loss per cycle. Overall, BCB could lose ₹70-100 crore (approximately $12–15 million) for every missed tour till 4 years.' As the majority of ICC revenue is based on Indian viewers and sponsors, skipping Pakistan and Bangladesh matches can lower the overall broadcast value for all teams. The sponsors and broadcasters would lower their bid for the upcoming major tournaments if India declines facing Pakistan and Bangladesh. The same may occur if India refuses to play Bangladesh for a bilateral series as well. Conclusion If India adheres to not playing Pakistan and, potentially, Bangladesh, PCB might lose as much as ₹220 crore and BCB as much as ₹130 crore every ICC cycle. Beyond the money, fewer India matches result in less international exposure, fewer opportunities for their players, and an actual danger of financial distress.
