The International Cricket Council has announced the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year 2024, led by Sri Lanka's Charith Asalanka. However, no Indian has been named in the list. Notably, the last time India won an ODI match was in 2023, in the 2023 ODI World Cup semifinal against New Zealand. Asalanka guided Sri Lanka to 13 wins in 21 ODIs, securing series victories against Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, India, and the West Indies. Individually, he amassed 605 runs in 16 matches at an average of 50.02, including one century and four fifties. Pakistan’s Saim Ayub and Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz open the lineup. Ayub impressed with multiple centuries against South Africa, while Gurbaz scored 531 runs at 48.27, with three hundreds and two fifties. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis, Sri Lanka's top scorers of 2024, and West Indies’ Sherfane Rutherford, who averaged 106.2 with one century, strengthen the middle order. Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarzai contributed as an all-rounder, while Wanindu Hasaranga’s 7/19 against Zimbabwe ranked among ODI history’s best bowling figures. Pakistan’s Haris Rauf and Shaheen Afridi spearhead the pace attack, supported by Afghanistan spinner AM Ghazanfar, who already has two five-wicket hauls in his brief career.
