Australian cricket great Ian Healy has warned England that success in the first Test in Perth will be the defining factor in their Ashes series chances. Healy feels that if the English team loses the first test, it will set the tone for another series loss in Australia. The opening Test of the five-match Ashes series will commence on November 21 at Perth's Optus Stadium. England will have only a single warm-up game prior to the series, which is a three-day game against a local team at Lilac Hill Park from November 13-15. Healy Predict a 3-1 Victory if England Slip in Perth England have not won the Ashes since 2015. Their previous two home series, in 2019 and 2023, finished as 2-2 draws, and their most recent Australian series victory was in the 2010-11 season. Healy feels that the past could be repeated if England downplay the Perth conditions. Healy told SENQ Breakfast: "England will win a Test... (But) you will see how you look when you’re underdone in Perth – I hope England watch it. It was swinging and bouncing. All the batsmen were playing outrageous shots and getting caught. England, watch out, you’re doing the same thing." Healy went on to say that Perth conditions usually prove difficult for visiting teams, particularly those which have not received sufficient match practice in Australia. He added: "They’re coming in underdone, and our fast bowlers looked fresh and sharp last night (in the ODI against India). Are England going to win a Test? Yes, but I think it will be close, maybe 2-2. Perth is the most important Test. If England loses in Perth, they will lose 3-1. Win in Perth, it’s 2-2." He opined that Marnus Labuschagne ought to open the batting with Usman Khawaja, citing Labuschagne's return to form following a challenging couple of years at Test level. Healy said: "I’m very happy with Marnus’ form, he’s back. Marnus can open and he’s happy to go wherever selectors want him. I’ve got him at 1 and Khawaja at 2. Konstas comes in when Uzzie retires." Labuschagne returned with a great comeback this domestic season, scoring four centuries in five innings in three List A and two Sheffield Shield games for Queensland. His efforts have rekindled his chances of playing the next Ashes after he was dropped from the side for the West Indies series last month. While both sides are preparing for the eagerly awaited Ashes series, Healy's warning is a reminder that the fate of the entire contest might be decided by the first Test in Perth. With England continuing their wait for their first Test victory on Australian soil since 2011, all attention will be on Optus Stadium when the series starts.
