New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson has spoken about one of the most talked about moments of the 2019 ICC World Cup semi-final match between India and New Zealand. The encounter, held at Manchester's Old Trafford, was a gripping struggle as India attempted to chase 240 runs for a final berth. What left Ferguson in shock was the moment MS Dhoni left a ball in the middle of the high-stakes chase. India’s start had been disastrous as Trent Boult and Matt Henry ripped through the top order, leaving India reeling at 5 for 2 and later 24 for 4. A determined knock of 77 from Ravindra Jadeja, combined with Dhoni’s calm presence, gave India hope. With the required run rate climbing, Dhoni’s decision to leave a delivery surprised Ferguson. While speaking to CricTracker about this incident, Ferguson said: "I can't remember what they were needing to chase at the time, but I knew they had to score a few runs. The plan was to bowl and see if MS would undercut it, and he left it. So I was surprised because naturally, when you're bowling, you're trying to restrict runs, then it's nice when a batter leaves it." India still required 31 off 12 when Dhoni played a classic upper cut over deep backward point for six, transferring pressure onto Ferguson. Ferguson said: "I think the next over, the first ball, I tried again, and he just got it over the boundary for six. So the plan almost worked the second time as well. But it was nice to get him out that game and, of course, get across the line in the semi-final." But India's pursuit folded in the next over. Jadeja's fall in the 48th over put more pressure, and Dhoni attempted to take India home. But his run-out off Martin Guptill's direct throw on the third ball of the 49th over ended India's hopes. The incident became the most emotional moment of Indian cricket, one in which Dhoni played his final international game. In a year, on 15th August 2020, Dhoni retired from global cricket but kept inspiring cricket fans in the IPL, guiding Chennai Super Kings to victories in 2021 and 2023.
