Jofra Archer's management and player contracts were questioned by former England captain Michael Vaughan on why centrally contracted players get to pick and choose franchise matches over internationals. Speaking on Cricbuzz, Vaughan seemed disappointed that Archer is staying to play in the IPL 2026 in India instead of coming to England for a Test match against New Zealand. England have announced their squad for their first Test against the New Zealand national cricket team which starts on the 4th June at Lord's. Archer was not selected for the squad as the ECB want to ensure they are managing the comeback from injury properly. Vaughan's concern, however is the growing impact of franchise cricket on England's international schedule. Vaughan said : "I'm sure he'll be in the squad (for the second test). It comes midway through June. I think we have a problem in English cricket at the moment because Jofra was obviously staying for the full IPL. There's some contract that the ECB have done with the BCCI that's allowing all our players to stay for the duration." My argument is it is the international contract above anything franchise." The ex-England batsman warned that the Test format could take a back seat if players continue to miss important home matches for their league contracts around the world. Vaughan also felt that if the ECB did agree to allow their players to finish the IPL the Test summer would have to be pushed back slightly. Vaughan Expressed : "Look all these franchise leagues are great I love them for the players. But I just think if we are starting to look at a domestic league as the priority over and above a Test match I think there is a real problem now. If there is an agreement the ECB have done with the BCCI then I suppose you have to start your Test summer off a little bit later then." He went onto add that obviously the team would like to have the best player available at home when there is a series. He Concluded : "I would want, if I was Rob Key, the Director of cricket, or Brendon McCullum, the coach, I would want my best bowler bowling in the first Test match against New Zealand at Lord's not out here." The quick bowler has enjoyed an impressive campaign with Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2026 so far. The fast bowler has taken 17 wickets in 12 matches for the Royals at a strike rate of 9.09 and continues to be one of their most influential performers this year.
