Shubman Gill began India's Test captaincy with a five-wicket defeat to England at Headingley, Leeds. Despite hitting a sublime hundred, his side was unable to defend a decent total of 371 runs. England are now 1-0 up in the five-match series. The Indian bowlers failed to take enough wickets, and many experts felt Gill’s captaincy was too defensive. Some also said he didn’t show strong leadership on the field. Former India cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar shared his thoughts on JioHotstar, comparing Shubman Gill’s approach to Virat Kohli’s style as captain. Manjrekar said: “Most people felt Shubman Gill went too defensive. But I think he was trying to trap England by cutting off boundaries, hoping the wickets would come eventually." That’s different from someone like Virat Kohli, who might say: We have enough runs, I’ll get you all out before Tea. Whether he would have gotten wickets with an attacking field is not guaranteed, but he would have been at it." Manjrekar added: "Gill doesn’t have the same seam attack as England, though they don’t have Bumrah, but the English team has more all-round options. Even with Jadeja, I felt India should’ve started with a standard field rather than pre-empting reverse sweeps. You want to start with attacking intent, even if only for a few overs, before going defensive. That said, I don’t want to be overly critical of Shubman. He’s a new captain, and we should be understanding of that.” India will now look to come back in the second Test of Edgbaston, Birmingham, beginning July 2. However, things are even more tough for the Indian side as they will be heading to Edgbaston Test without Jasprit Bumrah. Also, there will be a pressure of not winning a single Test at this venue in the history.
