Sam Billings believes he can add value to England’s white-ball team if given the captaincy. The wicketkeeper-batter, who last played international cricket in 2022, has proven himself to be one of England’s most successful domestic captains. Billings led Oval Invincibles to back-to-back victories in The Hundred and recently guided Dubai Capitals to an ILT20 title in the UAE. Speaking to BBC Sport, the 33-year-old expressed his desire to lead England, stating that he would be honored if given the opportunity. “I’d be honoured, you would obviously jump at an opportunity like that. I feel like I can add value,” Billings said. While his chances of securing the captaincy remain uncertain, England's head coach Brendon McCullum and director of cricket Rob Key have not ruled out appointing a captain from outside the current squad. "I've not had a conversation with anyone, but from a leadership point of view, I've loved the time over the past few years where I've had some really good success," Billings added. He also added that England's domestic circuit boasts immense talent, making squad selection a relatively straightforward process. "The talent in domestic cricket in this country is always there, certainly in white-ball cricket. You don't have to reinvent the wheel. It will just be a tweak here or there, picking a really nice, balanced side," he said. 'I can't speak highly enough of Ben Stokes' Following Jos Buttler's resignation as captain, speculation arose about Ben Stokes reclaiming the role. However, Billings believes the all-rounder should prioritize Test cricket. "I can't speak highly enough of Ben Stokes. There's no better man in terms of captaincy and as an all-round cricketer. But his priority is the Ashes and the five-Test series against India." The 33-year-old underwent knee surgery at the end of 2023. "He is probably in the position where he can answer where his body can take him," Billings added. England players will now shift their focus to the Indian Premier League before returning to international duty for a five-match Test series against India in June.
