Former Australian and CSK cricketer Matthew Hayden believes that drastic changes to Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) strategy are unlikely in the upcoming IPL 2025 matches. Speaking about the franchise's longstanding approach, Hayden pointed out that CSK’s philosophy has always been to trust the process and back the players, even when results aren’t immediately forthcoming. “I doubt we’ll see major changes—it’s just not in CSK’s DNA. CSK has long been known for its consistent and calculated approach, led by MS Dhoni. Even when faced with challenges, the franchise has often stuck to its tried-and-true methods, providing a sense of stability that has paid off in past seasons," he said. Despite the team's resistance to changing its approach, Hayden suggested that CSK may need to find a point of difference. While they are not known for explosive powerplay batting, something that has become a hallmark of modern-day IPL, Hayden pointed out that this doesn’t mean the team cannot adapt. “They might not be the team that scores 60 runs in the powerplay, but they have to find a point of difference,” Hayden added. The shift to a more aggressive approach in the early overs has worked wonders for other teams in recent seasons, but Hayden stressed that CSK doesn’t need to mirror that style. Rather, they must identify their own unique strategy that can counter the current trends. CSK's batting woes Chennai Super Kings are currently enduring a season to forget, especially with the bat. The five-time champions find themselves in 10th place on the points table, with just one win and five consecutive losses. Notably, none of CSK’s batters feature in the top 25 of the Orange Cap race. Rachin Ravindra is their highest scorer so far, with 149 runs from six matches at an average of nearly 30 and a strike rate of 126.27. Apart from Rachin, Shivam Dube is the only other CSK batter in the top 30 of the IPL 2025 list. CSK also have the lowest run rate in IPL 2025, at 7.90. The team has struggled with partnerships as well, having crossed the 50-run stand only four times in the tournament. CSK will return to action on Monday, April 14, when they take on Lucknow Super Giants.
