Australia have named an unchanged squad for the second Ashes Test in Brisbane, starting December 4, with captain Pat Cummins and fast bowler Josh Hazlewood ruled out for a second successive match because of injury. Steve Smith will continue in interim charge as Australia look to build on their 1-0 lead after their dominant eight-wicket victory in Perth. Cummins is yet to recover from the lumbar stress injury that has kept him out since Australia’s tour of the West Indies in July. He bowled near full pace in the nets in Sydney, but the medical staff have suggested he needs more time. He will tour with the side, as he did for the Perth Test, but won’t play. Hazlewood, who missed the first Test because of a hamstring strain, is also not yet available to return. He bowled with shortened run-ups during training, as did Sean Abbott, who is also recovering from a hamstring problem. His position has now become debated following a match-winning 123 from Travis Head, who replaced him as opener. However, selectors have decided to retain Khawaja in the squad for the time being. In the absence of both Cummins and Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc once again leads the pace attack that will be complemented by Scott Boland and Brendan Doggett. A well-rounded Australian bowling group, on a Brisbane pitch that usually helps fast bowlers, will look to keep the pressure on England. Coach Andrew McDonald had earlier said that Cummins would be given till the last moment to prove his fitness, but the team has now taken an early call to avoid any risk.
