A lot of talk surrounding Rohit Sharma's future in the Indian team, especially when he turned 38 and hadn't been anywhere near his best lately. Meanwhile, all talk notwithstanding, Rohit has concentrated on the here and now, refusing to say much about the future, including how things go with him after the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025. Rohit and Virat Kohli are the only two survivors from India's 2013 Champions Trophy-winning team, when they beat England in the final at Edgbaston. However, both of them have not been in the best of form lately. They failed to deliver in the longest format during India's tour of Australia and were unable to regain their form even after returning to India. Ahead of the first ODI against England, Rohit was asked about his future in the team, but he chose not to answer those questions, focusing instead on the task ahead. Rohit exclaimed at the pre-match press conference: “How it is relevant that I talk about my future plans when there are three ODIs and a Champions Trophy? The reports (on my future) have been going on for a number of years and I am not here to clarify them." Sharma added: “For me, the three games (against England) and the Champions Trophy is very important. My focus is on these games, and I will see what happens thereafter." Rohit's recent form in Test cricket raised a concern. He scored only 31 runs in five innings against Australia with the abysmal average of 6.20. The Indian team was questioned to make transitional changes in the team and search for a new long-term captain. According to the report of TOI, Rohit has already talked to the selection committee over the plans post-2025 Champions Trophy wherein he will also carry on his lead for the team. The selectors, probably, are keeping the future in mind and remembering that 2027 is a World Cup year. There are hopes that young players like Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and Yashasvi Jaiswal would be the future captains in Tests and ODIs. Chances seem bright that Gill, who has already been the vice-captain in ODIs, may become the full-time captain sooner rather than later.
