Abhishek Sharma, after being terminated from the coaching troop of the Indian Cricket team, has rejoined Kolkata Knight Riders as the assistant coach of the team. After winning the 2024 champions title in the Indian Premier League, KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir got the call from the national team to be their head coach. Gambhir then took Nayar into the team, apart from adding a few other former Knights in the Indian coaching camp. The names include Morne Morkel and Ryan ten Doeschate. With BCCI appointing Sitangshu Kotak as the batting coach of the team, Nayar's position had apparently trembled until the final call came. Alongside, T. Dilip's tenure had ended as the team's fielding coach. While he was there with his extended days, there has been no official reason or announcement on dethroning Nayar. Several reports suggested that Nayar had some cold wars with a senior cricketer, and a few complaints came out that Nayar's influence had been counterproductive. Not only that, Gambhir, reportedly had not voiced his support for Nayar. He played a pivotal role in developing players like Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer. In 2024, he was promoted to be the team’s batting coach and was instrumental in KKR’s third IPL title win. Midway through 2024, he joined the Indian national team as an assistant coach under Gautam Gambhir but was released in early 2025. Nayar rejoined KKR for IPL 2025, marking a strong return to the franchise he helped build over five impactful years.
