Chennai Super Kings will kick off their IPL 2025 campaign against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Ahead of the much-anticipated clash, Ruturaj Gaikwad shared his thoughts on MS Dhoni's role in the upcoming season. The 43-year-old Dhoni arrived in Chennai in February and has been actively practising since then. When asked about his role in the team, Gaikwad said: "It is pretty much very simple, focused on trying to hit as much as sixes as possible and trying to get the right swing, trying to be in the best shape," he said. Since retiring from international cricket in 2019, Dhoni has only played in the IPL. Despite the lack of regular match practice, he continues to impress with his form. "I never thought he was out of shape even on the first day. So, I think obviously he is special — he's done it for so many years," Gaikwad added. He further compared Dhoni’s longevity to cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who recently featured in the Masters league. "Definitely, that always will be there. If you see now, even Sachin Tendulkar is batting as great as he is right now at the age of 50 [51]. So, I think still many years to go," he said. "I mean, every day we get to see him. Obviously, it inspires [us] a lot. A lot of new players have joined the team, and sometimes they, as professional cricketers, struggle to strike the ball as good as he is striking it right now. So, definitely, it inspires a lot of us, including myself, including everyone from the group," he said. Gaikwad remains optimistic about Dhoni’s contributions this season, confident that the veteran will continue to deliver when it matters the most. "He will be looking to contribute in the best way he can. I think nothing much really changes, and hopefully, he will continue to deliver those crucial knocks for us," he added. Over the last two years, Dhoni has shifted his focus towards the power game. In IPL 2024, he scored 161 runs, smashing 14 fours and 13 sixes at an impressive strike rate of close to 221.
