Former England spinner Monty Panesar has delivered a brutal assessment of Shreyas Iyer’s red-ball credentials, suggesting that the Indian batter lacks the technique to survive in seaming and swinging conditions. With India set to begin a five-Test series in England from June 20, and Iyer omitted from the squad, Panesar believes the selectors made the right call. “India haven’t missed a trick with Shreyas Iyer. He is a very good player on subcontinent pitches. His technique is very much suited to flat pitches, he’s dominant and score really well. He averages 64 in Ranji Trophy. I think in the seaming, swinging conditions in England, he’s vulnerable. Think that’s one of the reasons [why he was omitted], technically he would be found out,” Panesar told Insidesport. Iyer has played only one Test in England, managing just 34 runs in two innings. Overall, his away Test numbers outside Asia stand at 75 runs from six innings, with a top score of 31. Despite a solid IPL 2025 campaign as captain of PBKS, his Test credentials, especially in tough overseas conditions, remain under question. But in swinging, seaming conditions I don’t think he has the technique. He doesn’t play the ball late, he doesn’t have the soft hands. He has quick hands, doesn’t move his feet much, has brilliant hand-eye coordination – that sort of technique is suited for bouncy or fast pitches,” the former spinner added. Or possibly Australia with bouncy, fast pitches.” Shreyas Iyer currently leads Punjab Kings, who finished top of the IPL 2025 table and are set to face Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Qualifier 1. However, with the next red-ball assignment approaching, the debate over his Test future, especially abroad, has returned to the spotlight.
