New assistant coach Abhishek Nayar believes that Team India doesn't need a designated vice-captain at this stage. According to Nayar, IPL and presence of top-class senior players have been helping young players in the team to learn very fast. He also spelt out the new talent that was in store in the form of players like Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill, who have already started leading teams in the IPL. Nayar sai that The future of India's Test team seems bright with players like them maturing into mentally resilient cricketers. Abhishek Nayar told media: "I think we need to understand that we have got a lot of IPL captains in this team. When you talk about the likes of Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, hopefully a Yashasvi going forward. There are a lot of players who have led their franchises." Yes, they are youngsters in terms of age and the amount of cricket they have played. But, I think overall, mentally and in their development as a cricketer, I think they have the leadership qualities that are required. You don't need to have a vice-captain that should be designated. "I think overall, the thought process of these youngsters if of a senior player. It's of someone who has played a lot of cricket. With the likes of Virat, Rohit in the dressing room, it speedens that process where you are learning a lot faster on the go. I feel our future and all the youngsters are in great hands." Rohit Sharma is the Test captain, but India has not announced any vice-captain for a two-match Test series against Bangladesh. This year, the cap of vice-captain was worn by Jasprit Bumrah for the home Test series against England in the first half of 2023. Shubman Gill has been appointed as vice-captain for ODI and T20I from 2024 T20 World Cup. Jasprit Bumrah will be at the top of the list to eventually replace Rohit Sharma as Test captain, having captained the side once already in the match against England while Rohit was injured. Though Rishabh Pant has led India in limited-overs formats, his management won't hand him extra responsibility - that of Test captaincy - until he starts to regain form after the big injury layoff. Shubman Gill is another batsman being looked at as a future captain, given his increasing relevance in the leadership position in the limited-overs games.
