The former India captain MS Dhoni announced his decision to stop working as a cricket commentator after he retires from professional cricket. The legendary wicketkeeper-batter, who led India to three ICC trophies, feels commentary is a tough job that needs balance, skill, and strong knowledge of statistics, areas where he feels he may not fit in. Dhoni has kept his distance from public cricket commentary since 2020 when he completed his international cricket retirement. He currently participates in professional cricket through the IPL, where he competes with the Chennai Super Kings team. “Commentary Is Very Difficult,” Says Dhoni Dhoni shared his reasons for not wanting to work as a commentator during a YouTube session with sports broadcaster Jatin Sapru. "Commentary is very difficult. I feel there is a very fine line between describing the game and in that process getting into a zone where you start criticising individuals who are playing the game. It's a very thin line." Dhoni said that commentators often do not realise when their words may sound harsh. "Often, you don't even feel that what you are doing is may be borderline wrong. You would always like to be on the other side where you are describing the game." He said that the ability to explain a team’s poor performance without damaging player morale exists as a special talent. "If the team is losing there are reasons behind it, and you need to have the skill of describing those reasons without anybody feeling bad. That is the art of commentary." A Good Listener, But Awkward on the Phone He talked about his personality traits which he shows outside his playing time. He explained that he listens well to others while he prefers talking to them in person. "I'm a very good listener… if I don't know about the topic I don't speak much because I will be absorbing more if I'm listening." He made a funny statement that he still needs to improve his phone skills. "I'm a very awkward guy when it comes to speaking on the phone." He ended his statement by saying that he still needs to work on improving his phone skills.
