Former Indian cricketer turned commentator critic Sanjay Manjrekar feels that the South African legend AB de Villiers played for the wrong team for eleven years in the Indian Premier League. ABD joined the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2011, and since then, he has played for the team till he retired from all formats in 2021. Even RCB has branded Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, but Manjrekar pointed out that RCB could not use him properly as a batter. In the Star Sports Show, when Manjrekar was asked if Surya had rightly justified ABD's "Mr. 360" tag, he said, “I’ll say yes, because of the match-winning impact. AB was incredible. But AB’s greatness was that he averaged 50 in Tests. Even in one day (ODIs). So, he’s an amazing player. But only if you look at T20 cricket; I’ve seen both of them a lot. AB, in IPL, he was not used properly. His real ability. So, in IPL we didn’t get that much juice out of him. Definitely (batted higher). And, sorry to say, but played for the wrong franchise. If he had played elsewhere, we could have seen the greatness of AB de Villiers." After spending three seasons with them, he was acquired by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) during the IPL 2011 mega auction. De Villiers remained with the Bangalore-based franchise for 11 seasons before retiring from the league in 2021. In his IPL career, de Villiers accumulated 5162 runs in 184 matches but was unable to secure the coveted IPL title. He featured in two finals with RCB, in 2011 and 2016, but ended on the losing side both times. Despite not lifting the trophy, de Villiers is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in IPL history. As RCB’s second-highest run-scorer, he amassed 4491 runs in 156 matches for the franchise, including two centuries and 37 half-centuries. Notably, he is among the elite group of players to have crossed the 5000-run mark in IPL history.
