Former Australia skipper Aaron Finch has lauded Virat Kohli’s selfless approach during his time as India’s Test captain, saying the former India leader often made decisions that benefited the team even if they came at the cost of his personal records. Finch credited Kohli for embracing tough conditions at home and for consistently putting the team first throughout his red-ball leadership stint. Kohli, who recently bid farewell to Test cricket, leaves behind an unmatched legacy in the format. Under his captaincy, India played 68 Tests, winning 40 of them, the most by any Indian skipper. His record at home was particularly dominant, with 24 wins in 31 matches. But Finch believes Kohli’s greatness went beyond stats, pointing to his tactical decisions and willingness to forgo easier batting conditions. "What really stands out to me about Virat's leadership is that you can look at his numbers now and say they're not as good as they were five years ago. But he was playing on some wickets in India that were spinning hugely from day one. It was about putting your own ego aside to say, 'What's the best thing for my team right now to win a Test match against this opposition?'" Finch said during a chat on JioStar during the RCB vs KKR IPL 2025 match. Also READ: Will Sanju Samson return for PBKS clash? RR captain reveals Ravi Shastri backs Finch’s take Finch also explained how Kohli, despite having the option to request batting-friendly surfaces and boost his own numbers, always prioritised team results. Kohli’s leadership coincided with India developing a world-class pace attack, and his support for result-oriented wickets helped shape the team’s identity both at home and abroad. "They could have rolled out some flat wickets and said, 'I'm going to cash in on my own runs and make sure that my record stacks up with some of the all-time greats,' but he put his own ego aside and said, 'I want what's best for my team to win this match,'" Finch added. His comments drew agreement from former India coach Ravi Shastri, who said: "Brilliant point, and it sounds better when it comes from you rather than me." Kohli retired with 9,230 Test runs at an average of 49.29, placing him fourth among India’s highest run-getters in the format. While his numbers dipped in recent years, his impact remained undiminished. Also read: IPL 2025: DC vs GT Match 60 Prediction - Who Will Win Today? In his final Test appearance earlier this year in Sydney, he was seen setting fields and lifting team morale in the absence of Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah.
