Former India opener Virender Sehwag did not hold back while criticising Hardik Pandya’s bowling changes during Mumbai Indians’ 7-wicket loss to Punjab Kings in their final league match of IPL 2025. Speaking on Star Sports, Sehwag pointed out a specific tactical error that, in his view, gave PBKS the upper hand in the chase. “I said it during commentary. Even after Deepak Chahar's hamstring was strapped during the match, Hardik made him bowl two overs. Chahar's first over was a maiden but he conceded 28 runs in the next two overs. That shifted the match in Punjab Kings' favour. If Chahar was not given his second over and Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya or Ashwani Kumar bowled it instead, the 17 runs could have been saved and PBKS would have felt the pressure. Bumrah conceded a few runs and it is natural that even Hardik will concede a few. But, as a captain, he disappointed me with his bowling changes. He did not make the right changes on time and that is why, MI were left on the back foot,” Sehwag said on Star Sports. PBKS successfully chased down 185 in just 18.3 overs, with Inglis and Arya leading the charge. Sehwag’s comments highlight how Chahar's expensive spell turned the momentum despite his early control. MI posted 184/7 after batting first, with Suryakumar Yadav scoring 57 off 39 and Hardik Pandya chipping in with 26 off 15. PBKS’ chase was powered by Priyansh Arya’s 62 and Josh Inglis’ match-winning 73 off 42 balls. The pair’s aggressive stand left MI’s bowlers scrambling, with only Jasprit Bumrah keeping things tight, conceding just 23 runs in his four overs.
