Following the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, there is no doubt that a void has been created in the Indian leadership group. In such a scenario, Jasprit Bumrah seems like an undisputed name for the captaincy, but his injury concerns have been a big headache for selectors. Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin echoed similar words while speaking on his YouTube channel, "Ash ki Baat." While he prioritized experience, he did not wave off the injury issues of Bumrah. He said, "The team that will tour England will be a completely new team, a transformed team where Bumrah will probably be the senior-most player. He is obviously one of the captaincy options; I think he deserves the captaincy, but the selectors will take a decision based on his physical capacity. Their retirements will definitely create a leadership vacuum. You can't buy experience, especially on tours like this. Virat's energy and Rohit's composure will be missed." Ash said, "I didn't have an idea both [Rohit and Kohli] would retire together." Ash felt that Kohli could have easily played for one or two more years. And Rohit could wait till the England series. Ash said, "There will be a sense of fulfilment, but I honestly feely Kohli definitely had one-two years of Test cricket left in him. Rohit, I felt would at least go on till the England Test series, because there's a leadership vacuum in the team. Tests has been the finest [format for India] in the last 10-12 years, but just for the sake of leadership, Rohit should've played till the England series, and if he'd performed, he could've carried on and given some more leadership." Ashwin further said Rohit's best batting came during the 2021 England tour, especially alongside KL Rahul. He felt Rohit’s peak phase was from 2018 to 2023. On Kohli, he called the twin tons in Adelaide 2014 one of the best he’d seen, adding that Kohli was a true ambassador of Test cricket, with several great knocks even in defeats.
