Hayley Matthews led the West Indies team to the T20 World Cup 2024 knockout stage by thrashing the English side in a do-or-die match on Tuesday, October 15, at the Dubai Cricket Stadium. This was the first time in the last six years that the West Indies managed to reach the semi-final stage of this prestigious tournament. It is worth mentioning that, this was also the first time when they defeated the England side in the T20Is after getting hammered in 13 consecutive matches. Despite the slim chances surrounding the West Indies’ making it to the semifinals, especially after their first-round exits in the last two World Cups, they proved their critics wrong. With strong half-centuries from Matthews and Qiana Joseph, the Caribbean side successfully chased down a 142-run target, sealing the victory with two overs to spare. As far as I can remember, the last time we beat them was back in 2018, but everyone still came here with a belief and a fight. And it just shows what we can do as a West Indian team. I think a lot of people coming up against us know that if it is one thing we've got, it's a lot of hearts and a lot of fights. And we just showed that today." Meanwhile, the West Indies team will clash against New Zealand in the second semi-final on Friday, October 18, at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah.
