Former England spin bowling all-rounder Moeen Ali made his Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) debut in IPL 2025 in the match against Rajasthan Royals (RR). He came in for Sunil Narine, who was unwell and missed the game. KKR ended up securing their first win of the season, defeating RR by eight wickets at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. Moeen was instrumental to KKR's goal, having a major impact with the ball. With his performance, he kept Rajasthan Royals to a humble total of 151/9. Replacing Narine, one of the best players of KKR, he had huge shoes to fill but posted a decent game. Even though he bowled well, Moeen had a bad day with the bat. Replacing Narine at the top of the innings, he played against England paceman Jofra Archer but could not come to terms with his pace. His visit to the crease was short-lived, as he got run out for a mere 5 runs off 12 balls. Even though Archer has not been in his best form in IPL 2025, having conceded 33 runs in 2.3 overs against KKR and spilled a record 76 runs in four overs against SRH in his last match, Moeen still appreciated his pace. He added that he hadn't experienced such fast bowling since competing in the Ashes. "It was nice. I have been practising well. I was told this morning Sunil was not well. It was hard to replace Sunil, but I did a fair job. Those are the wickets you enjoy the most, try and open the batters up, spin the ball as much as you can. Really good, really good bunch of guys, it's been amazing so far. Trying to get better at 37-years-old. It's a very very balanced side, all these players are amazing, Narine, Russell and Quinny always guaranteed to play so it's tough to get in." Take your chance when it comes and make the most of it." Speaking about Archer's bowling, Moeen said: "I have not faced that sort of fast bowling probably since the Ashes. I was the unlucky one facing him, he was too quick for me. Just to stay on top of your game and still try to improve and develop. Use my experience and keep the stumps in play and to the left-handers in particular bowl it tight." Having won their first match of IPL 2025, KKR will now turn their attention to their next game against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on March 31. The team will be hoping to carry on their momentum as they look to deliver another good performance.
