Hardik Pandya, India's world No. 1 all-rounder, will miss the opening match of the IPL 2025 season as he has been handed a one-match suspension by the cricket board after Mumbai Indians (MI) were unable to keep above the minimum over-rate in their final game of the 2024 IPL season against Lucknow Super Giants at Wankhede Stadium. This was the third offense of the season for Mumbai Indians (MI) and according to the rules, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) declared that Hardik will serve his ban in the first match of IPL 2025 even if he changes his team. Besides the suspension, Hardik was also be fined Rs 30 lakh, whereas the rest of the team along with the 'Impact Player' were fined from Rs 12 lakh to 50% of their match fee. Hardik Pandya's suspension is a blow for MI as they return from the off-season. Still, MI believe in their team and their leadership; Suryakumar Yadav is likely to captain the side in the season-opener in Hardik Pandya's absence. Besides Hardik Pandya, the franchise has retained four Indian players namely, Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma. Jasprit Bumrah, MI's first-choice retention, will continue with the team at a salary of Rs 18 crore. Suryakumar, Rohit, and Tilak will remain with MI for salaries of Rs 16.35 crore, Rs 16.30 crore, and Rs 8 crore, respectively. Mumbai Indians also possess one Right to Match (RTM) card, that they can exercise on an uncapped player during the mega-auction in IPL 2025. With a purse of Rs 45 crore the franchise has all their ducks in a row ahead of the auction that would be quite essential in strengthening their squad.
