Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh seemed baffled by India's team selection for the 2025 Champions Trophy, especially on the exclusion of Yuzvendra Chahal and Sanju Samson. India has gone for a spin-based bowling unit, having four spinners: Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, and Ravindra Jadeja. However, having no Chahal made Harbhajan feel that India will lack variation in their bowling unit. In an interview with Switch, Harbhajan Singh said, “Sanju isn't there. Yuzvendra Chahal isn't there, too. You've picked four spinners, two of them are left-armers. You could've included a leg-spinner for variation, too. Chahal is a superb bowler. I don't know what wrong he did, that he doesn't fit in this team." Yuzvendra Chahal last featured for India in the ODI format during the series against New Zealand in January 2023. Since then, he has not been part of the 50-over setup and was notably left out of the squad for the ODI World Cup held later that year. Over the course of his ODI career, the 34-year-old has taken 121 wickets in 72 matches, with an average of 27.13 and an economy rate of 5.26, including two five-wicket hauls. Chahal's most recent selection for the Indian team was in the T20 World Cup 2024, where he did not get a chance to play, with Kuldeep Yadav, Jadeja, and Axar Patel being prioritized in the playing XI. He strongly believes Sanju's skillset suits the requirements of the tournament. Despite scoring runs, the fact that he has been dropped shocked him. Harbhajan further said, “Truly, I feel bad for him. He scores runs but he is dropped. I know you can only select 15, but I feel his batting suits the format. He has an average of 55-56, but he isn't even there as a second wicketkeeper. When we talk about selecting him, people ask, in whose place? Places can be made." Sanju Samson has been in exceptional form recently, recording three centuries in his last six T20I appearances. He also showcased his brilliance in ODIs by smashing a century against South Africa in December 2023. The 30-year-old has accumulated 510 runs in 14 ODI innings, maintaining an impressive average of 56.66 and a strike rate of 99.60. His career stats include one century and three half-centuries. Despite these commendable performances, Samson has struggled to secure a consistent place in the squad, as selectors continue to favor Rishabh Pant over him.
