Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faced their seventh defeat in nine matches in IPL 2025, going down to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Chepauk on Friday. Batting first, CSK could only post 154, which proved too little despite a decent bowling effort. It marked another match where CSK’s batting unit struggled to find momentum. Former India opener Virender Sehwag did not hold back while analysing CSK’s batting decisions. Speaking on Cricbuzz, Sehwag questioned the team's approach, particularly the decision to promote Sam Curran at No. 3 and Ravindra Jadeja at No. 4, ahead of Dewald Brevis. "Half the CSK batters are asking when they will be able to go home, let this tournament come to an end," Sehwag said. Sam Curran, batting at No. 3, managed only 9 off 10 balls, while Jadeja scored 21 off 17 deliveries. In contrast, Brevis, who came in at No. 5, showed promise with a fluent 42, including four sixes and a boundary. Sehwag stressed that senior players needed to take more responsibility at the crease. "At least one person should've taken some responsibility. Brevis was playing that role but he got out playing a shot. If Jadeja is coming up the order, his strike-rate is poor, but at the very least he should've stuck around till the 15th-18th over so that the team could have play around him," Sehwag added. "I can't understand what Sam Curran is doing at No.3 in this line-up. He has played up the order for sure, he has batted No.4 in ILT20, and he has played that role intelligently. But, in this line-up, when you have Brevis, play him at No.3. Then Dube can come in next, followed by Jadeja, Sam Curran and Deepak Hooda," Sehwag said. He also pointed out how much CSK were missing their regular opener Ruturaj Gaikwad, who used to consistently score runs at Chepauk. "They are missing Ruturaj Gaikwad in this line-up, he used to consistently make runs in Chennai," Sehwag remarked. Despite Brevis' encouraging knock on his IPL 2025 debut, as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh, CSK's total was not enough. SRH chased down the target with eight balls to spare, leaving CSK struggling at the bottom of the table with just two wins from nine matches.
