Glenn Maxwell will captain Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket 2025. Although Steve Smith captained Washington during their championship-winning season in 2024, Maxwell has been named the captain for the 2025 season of the league because Smith has limited availability for the tournament based on national commitments. Interestingly, Maxwell, who recently indicated his retirement from ODIs, has some leadership background to his credit, having skippered Melbourne Stars in Big Bash League (BBL) in 65 games with 34 wins and 30 losses with one no result. He was also captain of the Punjab Kings in the IPL 2017 and had seven victories out of 14 games and narrowly failed to reach the playoffs spot. He also took 10 wickets with an average of 17 and an economy of 6.66 in eight innings. While that is happening, Smith will feature in just two games for the team in the 2025 season since he is a member of the Australian team for the tour of Caribbean Islands for a three-match Test series.
