Very few people would have given India a chance in this test match after they found themselves to be 211/5 on the evening of the first day. Little did anyone know, that would be the last moment England were ahead in the game. Skipper Gill took the matter in his own hands and the rest as they say, is history. Not only did India score a mammoth total, they also went on to completely demolish the English side over the next four days, crushing them with a huge margin of 336 runs and registering their first ever test victory at Edgbaston, Birmingham. View this post on Instagram A post shared by KL Rahul👑 (@klrahul) Gill Bats, Bats and Bats... It was the Indian skippper who led the charge once again in the series. Although India dominated most of the parts in the 1st test, they ended up on the losing side on the last day. After the match, Shubman Gill had talked about how he should have played longer in the first innings and not thrown his wicket away while batting on 147. He thought that the shot was a bit careless and wanted to put up an even bigger score. That was the story of Headingley. Now came Edgbaston and the hosts once again found the visiting captain standing like an immovable object, full of grit and determination. It seemed as if Gill had promised himself to play as long as he could, score as many runs as he could and well, he definitely kept that promise. Gill did exactly what he said in the media, after the first test. He batted longer. He ensured India's victory before getting dismissed. Coming in at 95/2 in the 1st inns, the stage was decently set for the 25-year old batter but however the quick fall of Rishabh Pant and Nitish Reddy reduced the team to 211/5. India had two horrendous lower order collapses in both the inns of the 1st test. With half the side back in the hut, the dark clouds of another collapse loomed over the Indian side. It was the Indian captain who stood tall along with the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar to add 347 runs for the next two wickets. Jadeja played a tremendous knock of 89 and had a partnership of more than 200 runs with his skipper. As if the situation wasn't already good enough for India, then came Sundar and played an impressive hand of 42 runs and added another 144 runs with Gill. The common link throughout the innings was Gill. He went on to play a historic marathon knock and broke multiple records. Gill's 269 in the first inns became the highest score by any Indian captain and also the highest score by any Indian player in England. He went past greats like Virat Kohli, Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid. Turns out, Gill's hunger hadn't died yet. He was still hungry, very hungry in fact. He then went on to get another 161 runs in just 162 balls in the second inns. The Indian skipper broke all sorts of records with those two huge knocks and definitely got his name etched in the history books. Gill scored a total of 430 runs in the match which is the 2nd highest aggregate score ever in a test match, after Graham Gooch's 456. Shubman Gill received the player of the match award for his historic knocks. A 250+ and a 150+ in the same match. There was a lot of talk around Gill's poor record overseas but now the whole world is witnessing his magic. Quite sure, these two innings of his will be talked about for a long time, maybe even after decades. He now has 585 runs in this series already, in just two matches and can be a big headache for the English bowlers going forward. Is he 100% fit or not, will he play the 2nd test, if he doesn't play then who's going to replace him, how will India pick 20 wickets without him...and all sorts of thing. Fast forward a week and here we are, with India's bowling having completely outplayed their counter parts and bringing a collapse in both the inns on such a flat pitch. It was an almost must-win game for the visitors as they were already 1-0 behind in the series but they decided to take the gamble and rest the deadliest pacer of the world. In came Akash Deep in his place and oh boy, how well did he turn the tables! He had an unbelievable outing in the game, taking a 10-fer and playing a massive role in this historic win for India. He returned with the figures of 10-187 which is also the bowling performance in a match by an Indian pacer in England. Especially in the 2nd inns, he ran through the top and middle order of the English batting order. Akash hit the good length approx. 65% and that accuracy brought him the results. He kept targeting the stumps and the cracks in the pitch constantly which helped him produce multiple jaffas, leaving the opposition batters with no answers. His deliveries which dismissed Joe Root and Harry Brook looked nothing less than a wizard casting his magical spell, making them dance to his tunes. He aslo took the last wicket and ensured a great win for India, ending up with 6 wickets in the 2nd inning. He also had a wonderful contribution of 4 wickets in the 1st inns. It would be safe to say that he didn't let India miss their premium pacer. Another positive sign for India is the return to form of Md. Siraj. The 31-year old pacer picked up 6 wickets in the 1st inns and looked threatening throughout the match. He did deliver some amazing spells in the previous match as well but wasn't lucky enough to get those much deserved wickets. He cleaned up the tail lightning quick with the second new ball which handed India a match defining 180 run lead. The duo of Siraj and Akash picked up 17 out of the 20 wickets and ensured that the English batters have some thinking to do before the next match at Lord's. Captain Gill confirmed that Bumrah would be returning in the next match and it's almost certain that Prasidh Krishna will be making way for the leader of the pack. Krishna hasn't been able to impress much in both the tests. Form of Other Batters The Indian batting order has been in sublime touch and it has taken the full advantage of these flat pitches in both the matches until now. Other than Gill's huge knocks, Jadeja also hit twin fifties in the match. Yashashvi Jaiswal scored a brisk 87 in the 1st inns and an aggressive 28 in the 2nd. KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant who failed to impress in the 1st inns, hit crucial fifties the second time around. Lord's Awaits With the series hanging in the absolute balance at 1-1 and the third test set to begin in just a couple days time, there is very less time for the teams to relax and think about the clash at The Home of Cricket. India have bounced back and will be even more excited with the return of Jasprit Bumrah who will be fresh. Having played only one test, Akash Deep would be fresh as well. And now suddenly their pace attack has started to look deadly and might just have the edge over the home team. On the other hand, England's bowling has failed to impress much and looks a bit out of rhythm. Chris Woakes has been the worst among the pacers while Josh Tongue and Shoaib Bashir have picked the wickets but have been really expensive. Brydon Carse has looked good but he seemed to be slightly stiff during the second inning. Gus Atkinson and Jofra Archer are back in their squad but both of them are coming after injuries so England might not want to put a lot of load on them straightaway. Now it's England who are appearing to be under pressure and searching for answers but they would be desperate to bounce back in the series. With the most iconic cricket stadium gearing up for a high voltage clash and the English summer picking up its vibe, the third test in London all set to be a blockbuster. Both the teams are expected to make some changes and would be looking to get a significant 2-1 lead in the mega series.
