South African pacer Gerald Coetzee had a pectoral muscle strain during the solitary T20I against Namibia, leaving his availability for the Pakistan tour in doubt. The right-arm pacer bowled a mere 1.3 overs, 13 balls including four wides, before exiting the field after a ball which appeared to have troubled him. Cricket South Africa (CSA) subsequently confirmed that Coetzee would play no further part in the match and would be evaluated on return home from Windhoek, where the match was held. "Coetzee will be assessed once he returns to South Africa," CSA said in a curt statement, stating his recovery timeline will be established following medical evaluation. String of Injuries Continues for Coetzee The setback is the latest addition to an increasing list of injuries for the 23-year-old pacer, whose fitness has been under pressure for the past couple of months. Coetzee was earlier forced out of the Champions Trophy due to a groin injury but returned to action in July with South Africa's tour of Zimbabwe. He has since appeared in matches for South Africa A against New Zealand A and was included in the T20I and ODI teams for the Pakistan tour. But this recent injury could compel the selectors to revisit their schedule with the limited-overs leg of the tour set to commence later in October after two Tests. Coetzee has not featured in a Test match since November 2024, when he suffered another groin injury that kept him out of action for the rest of the season. Only last week, left-arm seamer Kwena Maphaka was sidelined from the Namibia T20I and Pakistan tour after sustaining a hamstring strain during a domestic first-class match. Despite of all this, South Africa still has some depth to their bowling attack. Lizaad Williams and Nandre Burger have just recently come back from a back stress fracture and knee surgery, respectively. For the Test series against Pakistan, South Africa have Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, and Wiaan Mulder to choose from, while Lungi Ngidi will play in the white-ball games. South Africa are anticipating conditions that favor spin in Pakistan, and that is why Ngidi was left out of the Test team. The opening Test of the series begins on Sunday and marks the start of their title defence of the World Test Championship.
