Sunil Gavaskar has raised eyebrows over the Indian team management's failure to bring in Kuldeep Yadav in the playing XI for the second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham, which began on Wednesday, July 2. As per different reports, Kuldeep was set to play the second Test due to a couple of reasons. One of those was Ravindra Jadeja's failure to get penetration in the first Test. In the meantime, the second reason revolved around the Edgbaston track offering more assistance to the spinners, particularly with conditions that were set to be warm in Birmingham over the week. But Shubman Gill said in the toss that they considered taking Kuldeep into the team but decided against it in order to reinforce the batting lineup. All-rounder Washington Sundar was taken instead of Kuldeep in the playing team. Also Read | Will India Host Asia Cup 2025? ACC Writes to BCCI Over Schedule Here is what Gavaskar said on Sony Sports Network "I'm a little baffled that Kuldeep wasn’t picked, because on a pitch like this, where everybody says there’s a little more turn," Besides Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Akash Deep have replaced players in the team. Jasprit Bumrah has been rested, whereas Shardul Thakur and Sai Sudharsan were omitted. Gavaskar noted that the Indian batsmen did well in the first Test and registered 835 runs in the two innings. But the bowlers were unable to take all of the 20 England wickets. The ex-India captain believed that rather than selecting so many all-rounders to support the batting, India could have given themselves the best opportunity to select 20 wickets. “If your top-order batters are not giving you the runs you expect, then Washington at 7 or Nitish Reddy at 8 won’t necessarily fix that, because those weren’t the batters who failed you in the first Test. You scored 830 runs. You didn’t score 380 in two innings — it was 830-plus. That’s a lot of runs. So, where you needed strengthening was in the wicket-taking department, not so much in the batting,” Gavaskar concluded.
